Sei Whale
The Sei Whale is rarely observed because it prefers offshore waters. Most sighting information and information about the whale itself was and is provided by whalers. Therefore, this species is quite unknown and stands in the shadow of its larger relatives the
fin
and the
blue whale
.
Length and Weight
Average male length: 15.6 m
Average female length: 17.2 m
Body weight: 12,7 – 15,4 tonnes (12,700 – 15,400 kg)
At birth, the calf is about 4 - 5 m long and weighs around 700 – 800 kg. That is about as much as 3 adult grizzly bears!
Body and Fins
These whales have a long, slender body, just like the other rorqual whales.
The dorsal fin is curved and pointed, similar to that of a minke whale. Yet, it is placed more in the front.
