North Atlantic Right Whale

The North Atlantic Right Whale, also known as Northern Right Whale, is one of the most endangered whales! Scientists report that there are only 300 individuals left!

In 1998 I missed the chance to see two Northern Right Whales that cruised around near the Saguenay River mouth (St. Lawrence Estuary, Canada). It was a very rare sighting for this location (rarely there are observed rather downstream, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence). Although I was there for a couple of months that summer, we never came across them on sea. What a pity!

Length and Weight

Average male length: 15.6 m
Average female length: 16.9 m
Body weight: 70 tons (63,500 kg)

At birth, the calf is 4 - 6 m long and weighs around 1.1 ton (1000 kg). That is about as much as 3.5 adult grizzly bears!
