Keep an Eye on Whales!
Are you ready to learn more about whales, dolphins and porpoises? Yes? So take a deep breath, fluke-up and dive deep into the secret world of these astonishing animals!
Cetaceans (scientifically spoken) are incredible fascinating creatures and they spellbind many people, just like me!
These animals are hard to study because they live in the oceans and are submerged most of the time. We can only catch a glimpse on them when they break the water surface to take a breath. Blow! If you ever heard their breathing, you will never forget its sound!
More than 80 living species are known, including dolphins and porpoises. They all belong to the order of cetaceans. This order is split up into three sub-orders: the mysticeti (baleen species), the odontoceti (toothed species) and the archaeoceti (ancient species).
All species exhibit physical and behavioural variations and different natural histories. Some sing, some migrate and some dive very deep. Some are very social and live in big groups others prefer a lonesome lifestyle.
Yet, despite extensive research efforts, answers to many questions lay still in the dark and beyond our imagination!
This site aims to give you insight into the amazing and diverse ways of living of these ocean creatures:
· Taxonomic classification
· Interesting and unique facts
· Environmental dangers
· Commercial exploitation
· Evolutionary development
· Vocalisation and echolocation
· Strandings
· Distribution and migration patterns
And much more…
Hopefully, this site will keep the fascination alive as I pass on my passion about cetaceans!
And now, take the plunge into the whales’ realm and enjoy the dive while you are on it!
